About Kereita Forest

Kereita Forest is an indigenous forest reserve situated in Kiambu County, just north of Nairobi, Kenya. Spanning approximately 2,619 acres (1,060 hectares), the forest is characterized by dense vegetation, rolling hills, and several streams cutting across the landscape. This area is part of the larger Aberdare Range ecosystem and serves as an important watershed for the surrounding communities. The forest is home to a variety of flora including African olive, fig, and camphor trees, and fauna such as colobus monkeys, bushbucks, and over 200 bird species including the endangered Fischer’s turaco and Abbott's starling. The forest’s cool climate and high elevation, averaging around 2,200 meters, provide a perfect environment for these species.

Historically, Kereita Forest has been preserved not only for its ecological importance but also for cultural reasons, being a sacred site for local Kikuyu communities. Recreation in Kereita Forest includes hiking, mountain biking, birdwatching, and camping. Popular landmarks include the Kereita Falls, a scenic multi-tier waterfall that attracts visitors for its refreshing pools and photographic potential. The forest's trails vary from easy loops to longer routes that explore deeper parts of the forest, making it accessible to families and seasoned hikers alike. Visitors can also experience community-led eco-tourism initiatives, which promote conservation and local livelihoods. Its proximity to Nairobi makes it a favored day trip or weekend destination for outdoor enthusiasts looking to escape the city bustle and immerse themselves in nature.
